Difference between Biodegradable and Compostable

What is the difference between Biodegradable and Compostable?

Biodegradable

A subject or object capable of decomposing by bacteria and other living organisms and thereby avoiding pollution.

Paper waste can take from two - six weeks to decompose.

Compostable

Compostable materials are materials that have been certified to break down completely in non-toxic components (water, carbon dioxide and biomass) that will not harm the environment.

Compost can be made in as little as six-eight weeks. Sometimes it can take about a year. When all your contents you have put in start to turn dark brown and smell earthy the composting process is complete.

At Washla, I have put thoughts in every step of our business to be as eco-friendly as possible.

Our main goal is to rid plastic first and secondly to reduce carbon footprint. All our products come in plastic free packaging. Our shampoo and conditioners are wrapped in certified compostable filter paper and held together by paper stickers.

Soaps are wrapped in recycled kraft card and held with a paper label. Postal packaging are all eco-friendly which can be recycled and are biodegradable.

When Washla launched in August 2020, it was a huge reminder that supporting small and local was very necessary at the time where many businesses were trying to survive. Being able to find everything you need on your doorstep really reduces our own carbon footprint.

Though I could access cheaper ingredients abroad, I remained adamant to support UK businesses first and at the same time this was also reducing my business’ carbon footprint and therefore the consumers.

It feels great to be able to offer our customers more eco choices on the haircare market and to help them find affordable handmade hair products whilst protecting the environment.
